Why this happens here and not everywhere
A yard that drains perfectly in July can hold water for a week in March, and the reason is usually underneath it rather than on top.
Most of Erie and Niagara County sits on heavy clay. Clay drains slowly at the best of times, and in early spring it is doing something worse than that: the top few inches thaw while the layer below stays frozen solid. Meltwater soaks down, hits that frozen shelf, and stops. It has nowhere to go but sideways and up, which is why the puddle appears in the middle of a lawn that has no obvious low point.
This is also why the problem looks like it fixes itself. By May the frost layer is gone, the clay has dried, and the yard drains again. The underlying grade never changed. It will do the same thing next year.
Start with the water path
Watch where roof runoff, driveway runoff and melting snow actually move before deciding on a drain.
The single most useful thing you can do costs nothing: go outside during a thaw, in boots, while the water is running. Standing water tells you where it ends up. Moving water tells you how it got there, and that is the part that decides what the fix is.
Take photographs while it is happening. By the time anyone comes to quote the work the evidence has usually dried up, and a photo of two inches of standing water against a foundation is worth more than any description of it.
- Identify the highest and lowest areas
- Check where every downspout actually discharges
- Note water reaching foundations, hardscape or the garage slab
- Photograph conditions during the melt, not after
Why a drain may not solve everything
A drain only works when water can reach it and the outlet can discharge, and in a Western New York March neither is guaranteed.
This is the most common wasted spend we see. Someone puts a catch basin at the wet spot, and the following spring the wet spot is still there, because the water never had a route to the basin or because the outlet was frozen when it mattered. A drain is a destination. If the grade does not deliver water to it, it is an ornament.
Grade first, drainage second. That order is not a preference, it is the only sequence that works, and it is also usually the cheaper one.

What normally fixes it
Four things account for nearly every wet yard we are called out to, and they run cheapest first.
Downspout extensions solve more problems than anything else on this list. A downspout discharging half a metre from the wall is putting the entire roof into the ground next to the foundation. Getting that discharge three or four metres out, onto ground that falls away, fixes a surprising number of complaints for the price of an afternoon.
Regrading comes next, and means re-establishing fall away from the house over the first couple of metres. After that a dry well, which buys time by holding water until the ground can take it, and finally a French drain where there is genuinely somewhere for the water to go. That last condition is the one people skip.
When to ask for a site review
If water repeatedly reaches the foundation, damages hardscape, creates ice across a walk, or keeps part of the property unusable into May, the pattern is structural rather than seasonal.
Bring the photographs and a rough note of how long the water sits.
